Proposed Student Accommodation and University Hub:

RIBA INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION ENTRY

On 18th July 2008 NEWI college, Wrexham became Glyndwr University. In recognition of its new status the university ran an international design competition in association with the RIBA.

The brief called for a 500-bed extension to the existing student accommodation on the Plas-Coch campus to allow a greater number of students to live on site whilst studying at the university. Allied to this and to provide up to date facilities for the students the competition included the design of a new Student 'Hub' building that would accommodate a canteen, bars, shops, offices and meeting rooms.

The design ethos for the competition was to create a solution that could be delivered in phases, be modular in construction and have inherent environmentally friendly credentials. The end result would further seek to provide an attractive new icon that would act as a landmark and thus make more students desire to study at the university.
