Innovative design turns the tables on old school hall

Snazzy retractable tables have stolen the spotlight in our latest school development, where creative thinking was key to providing a multi-purpose hall for pupils.

The brand new facility at Yardleys School in Birmingham needed to be versatile, as it will be used for events, PE and sports lessons, school productions, exams and, of course, dinner.

Retractable tables, provided by Versa, will prove a fantastic time and labour saver, enabling the new space to be quickly and easily changed around to suit a variety of uses.

We undertook this project with our partners, Galliford Try and AM Griffiths & Sons.

Project technician Mandeep Mattu, said: “As well as providing the school with two new classrooms, the main reason for the extension was to build a new multi-use hall that could be adapted for several purposes.

“In architecture, it’s really important to think about all the ways a space will be used and provide practical solutions to suit the brief.

“These retractable tables will not only save space, as storage is no longer an issue, but they will make huge time and manpower savings for staff who no longer need to manhandle free-standing tables into place.”

Headteacher at Yardleys School, Mr Brynley Evans, said: “We are delighted with our new extension including a new multi-purpose hall and the Versa retractable tables which gives us greater flexibility and extra space for a range of activities including dining, PE, assemblies, exams and teaching more than one class at a time.”
